Getting specific medical information
We want to keep you informed as much as possible. The Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule protects the privacy of personal health information so caregivers are limited in the information they can provide, unless the patient, the patient's legal guardian or legal representative has authorized us to provide specific information. To ensure proper patient confidentiality prior to sharing any updates, each patient will receive a privacy code, which they can share with their family and friends. This allows the hospital to know the patient has authorized us to share their information with those who have the code. In order to protect the patient, hospital staff will NOT share any information about a patient's care without the privacy code.
We know it can be frustrating when you can't get the medical information you'd like to have, so we encourage you and your family to talk about this prior to coming to the hospital in order to understand and streamline communication.
